Riga

Riga, an old Hansa-city, has lived through a complicated history.
Johann Gottfried Herder lived here in 1764-1769 and started here what was later called "Sturm und Drang" movement. Immanuel Kant published here in 1781 the first edition of his Critique of Pure Reason. Richard Wagner wrote his Rienzi in 1840 in Riga and started his conductor's career in a newly established opera theater. Shimon Dubnow, the author of the multi-volume History of Jews in Poland and Russia wrote Kniga Zhizni in Riga. Wilhelm Ostwald was born in Riga and started here his research in catalysis and chemical equilibria that earned him the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1909. Mstislav Keldysh, President of the USSR Academy of Science, and Lipman Bers, President of the American Mathematical Society, were born in Riga. Piers Bohl proved the first ever fixed-point theorem in 1904.

Riga 800

In 2001 Riga becomes 800 years old. Official festivities will take place in August 2001. This will make life harder for the organizers of FCT 2001 but we will spare no effort to allow the participants to have a more extensive cultural program.
