LATNET
The
Data Networking Laboratory (LATNET)
was established in 1992 to provide the state-of-the art data communications
services to research and educational institutions in Latvia. Since
then LATNET has evolved into a
high-tech research laboratory which not only provides high quality
Internet services to research and educational institutions, but provides
Internet services to a great part of the Latvian market.
LATNET investigates networking
problems, e-work and e-business solutions, as well as multimedia applications
and other Internet applications for academic and business needs (J.Kikuts,
G.Barzdins). The results of
the research are regularly presented in the yearly scientific conference
on network problems. In 1993 LATNET
developed original wireless Internet access technology which today
covers Riga and almost all regions of Latvia.
LATNET is active in the content
providing - it maintains Latvian Web resources index "Welcome
to Latvia" http://www.latnet.lv/ directory with originally developed
search facility. The work of LATNET
is very important for presenting Latvian arts and culture in the Internet.
The LATNET arts gallery is highly
valued by the Internet community. The online shop of arts AMBERSEA
has started arts commerce in the Internet.
LATNET has been participating in
a number of international networking related development projects.
In 2001 LATNET joined the European
Gigabite Academic Network (GEANT) project. The GEANT network allows
to provide high quality Internet services to the academic institutions
and organisations of Latvia. Another project of the 5th Framework
of EC is EASYCRAFT that is creating a new business environment for
European crafts.
LATNET is a member of international
organisations including TERENA, CEEnet, RIPE.
