The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia (IMCS UL) was established in 1959 as Computing Centre of research character. The founder of the Computing Centre was Prof. E.Āriņš. At present the director is M.math. Ināra Opmane, director of development is Dr.sc.comp. R.Balodis-Bolužs and director of science is Dr.sc.comp. K.Čerāns.
The staff of IMCS UL consists of more than 200 employees from whom about half is in academic positions(senior researchers, researchers and assistants). Annual number of scientific publications is approximately 122(last five year average).
Apart from research, IMCS UL has always been involved in commercial software development.
IMCS UL is also one of the largest Internet service providers in Latvia (SigmaNet, earlier known as LATNET). Besides that IMCS UL houses the Master's Degree Studies in Computer Science at the University of Latvia.
