25th International Olympiad in Informatics has concluded with excellent results from Latvia’s team. The Olympiad took place in the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia during July 6-13. Latvia’s team members won three medals – a silver medal was won by Aleksejs Zajakins, and a bronze medal was won by Ojārs Vilmārs Ratnieks and Aleksejs Popovs each. The fourth member of the team, Mihails Smoļins, gave a good performance, but this time didn’t win a medal.
Altogether 299 participants from 77 countries took part in the Olympiad. 25 gold, 50 silver and 74 bronze medals were given. The best result was achieved by China’s team with four gold medals. The best performance, too, was given by China representative Lijie Chen. Medals were given to participants from 54 different countries.
Latvia’s team did better than both Lithuania and Estonia’s teams (one silver medal for the former, three bronze medals for the latter). This year Latvia managed to get a better rating than Lithuania in the overall count of earned medals over the past Olympiads.
This year, the team was lead by IMCS UL’s researcher Rihards Opmanis and winner of four IOI medals, current student at the University of Cambridge, Eduards Kaļiņičenko.
