In a ceremony on August 14, Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis honored and awarded Latvia’s team of pupils from International Olympiad in Informatics. This year, Latvia’s team earned one silver medal and two bronze medals. The Olympiad took place from July 6 to July 13 in University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, and in total, Latvia’s team gave the best performance between the three Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Minister of Education and Science, as well as President of The Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association Signe Bāliņa both expressed their satisfaction with the performance of the participants, as well as the promotion of Latvia worldwide by achieving these results.
Representative of JSC „Exigen Services Latvia” Pēteris Krastiņš reminded the importance of the time and work teachers have invested in preparing the participants, and representative of SIA „Lattelecom” Juris Gulbītis stressed that educating pupils in exact sciences must continue for Latvia to fully use its IT potential.
Latvia’s team of participants was lead by IMCS UL’s researcher Rihards Opmanis and student at the University of Cambridge and former IOI laureate, Eduards Kaļiņičenko. The former leader of the team, IMCS UL’s reaearcher Mārtiņš Opmanis, took part in IOI International committee.
